The moment: Mrs. Scully does not know what an orgasm is (from "Brave New World")
In what was a great year in television for female characters, and for the actresses who got to play them, Allison Janney shone especially bright as poor Margaret Scully, lonely, unsatisfied wife of a closeted university provost. Applying for the soon-to-be-famous Masters and Johnson sex study in the hopes of finally taking pleasure in sex, Margaret is instead mortified and more pained than ever when her intake interview reveals that she has never had an orgasm, which disqualifies her from participating in the study. As Janney's face goes from hopeful to sheepish to embarrassed to completely and utterly lost, you can both feel for this woman and predict who will be walking away with a guest actress Emmy next fall.
