No. 9 Worst - 'Revenge'
Airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. [Premieres September 21.]
Entertainment-wise, revenge is actually a dish best served piping hot, but this literacy-challenged adaptation of "The Count of Monte Cristo" plays everything far too cool. From Emily Van Camp's excessively placid lead performance on down, "Revenge" is far more invested in who's wearing what and who's doing their hair how to delve into the thornier aspects of vengeance, leaving me woefully uninterested in the Payback-of-the-Week schemes and what, if anything, this obsession is doing to the psyche of the main character. Viewers who like their soap operas pretty, rich and fundamentally dull may be able to focus on Madeline Stowe's well-pitched supporting performance and find a guilty pleasure. Sadly, the stakes are higher on your basic "Real Housewives" installment. And that's not meant as an endorsement for a hypothetical "Really Vengeful Housewives of the Hamptons."
