Jack Nicholson, "Batman"
Jack Nicholson received BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for his devilish, committed work as the Joker in Tim Burton's superhero blockbuster. It was really unlike anything we had seen from the actor before, and here was a guy who already had two Oscars when he saddled up to the task. He dived head first into the role, delivering a piece of iconography long before Heath Ledger would define the character for a whole other generation. There were some top notch lead actor performances in the summer of 1989, whether Robin Williams in "Dead Poets Society," Steve Martin in "Parenthood" or even Dennis Quaid in "Great Balls of Fire!" But none of them left the mark Nicholson did.
