It's not a traditional straight woman/comedian pairing.
The biggest change between the web series and the TV show is that the dynamic between Gene and Billie is more balanced.
"With the Billie character," explains Newhouse, "we wanted to make it less the straight man and the wacky man, and more about two characters who are deficient in some way and want to help each other. As opposed to the one woman chastising the other woman, it's more that they both look at each other like "You're an asshole, you're an idiot. And I'm going to fix you."
This makes the show less predictable, since you never know which of them (if not both of them) is going to have a crazy meltdown and ruin their latest adventure. It's also more fun for Newhouse to get to play a more ridiculous version of Billie.
"And I think it's more realistic," she adds. "If you were just an average Jane, you'd probably get the fuck out of there, no matter how much money they give you. Or you'd be a little more concerned. But she's so naive that I think you'd buy that she gets manipulated and convinced that all of this stuff is normal.
