Michelle Monaghan, 'True Detective'
Nomination Status: Assuming "True Detective" is strong, she should sneak in.
In Her Favor: Look, you're not wrong if you say that "True Detective" didn't have any female characters to equal the two male leads. And that's why Michelle Monaghan isn't submitted as Lead Actress in a Drama. Did she have enough material for a nomination in that category? No. But did she have enough for a *supporting* nomination? Of course she did. The episode in which Maggie seduces Rust to get revenge on Marty? That was absolutely a good enough acting showcase episode for a supporting nomination. There's no doubt in my mind that the fantastic "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" star could have given more shined significantly more with a significantly more involved part. But for what she was asked to do, Monaghan gave Maggie her all. Like are you gonna tell me Maggie Smith is giving a fuller performance on "Downton Abbey" than Monaghan gave in "True Detective"? Heck, are you going to tell me that Christina Hendricks and Emilia Clarke had more involved character work *this* season? Come on. That's crazy-talk.
Working Against Her: Monaghan *will* be hampered by the perception that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were literally the only two people in "True Detective."
