Which 'Modern Family' and 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' stars will make the cut?
Noel Fisher of 'Shameless'
Nomination Status: We've already moved out of the People With a Real Chance part of this gallery. I may be overlooking somebody, but I think there's a fairly small pool of actors likely to crash the Top 6 (or 7). I blame "Modern Family."
In His Favor: Mickey Milkovich was always one of the best "Shameless" background characters, but this season he became a much more important part of the comedy/drama thing, as the writers found ways to weave the character into several parts of the narrative, rather than mostly restricting him to Ian-centric storylines. So yes, the Ian story, with Mickey simultaneously accepting and owning his feelings for Ian while facing the scary possibility of Ian's hereditary mental health issues, was dynamic. But Mickey was also very funny and very messed up in the arc that saw him become an exploitative pimp and butting heads with Steve Howey's Kevin. If I were doing my personal preference Top 6, Fisher would make it.
Working Against Him: Even if "Shameless" had an awards pedigree and even if "Shameless" were clearly a comedy and even if Fisher had more name recognition, Mickey is still a VERY difficult character to embrace. He's a complicated, provocative and unique character but to understand how good Fisher was this year, you probably had to follow Mickey's full journey and I don't think Emmy voters are committed enough to "Shameless" for that to be likely.
