Which 'Modern Family' and 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' stars will make the cut?
Joe Lo Truglio of 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine'
Nomination Status: Overshadowed by Andre Braugher in a mostly closed category.
In His Favor: Dozens of shows have struggled to find ways to use the "State" and "Reno 911!" veteran and they've usually discovered that Lo Truglio's larger-than-life personality is hard to ground within even outlandish sitcoms. What "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" has done so impressively is created a world in which Detective Charles Boyle gets to be simultaneously oversized, but also completely organic to the precinct. And through the first season of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," Boyle has been asked to do some pretty ridiculous things. He became Neo, aggressively critiqued local pizza, dealt with the ramifications of getting shot in the butt, took a medication that made him compulsively tell the truth and was awarded a police honor alongside a horse. Boyle is a great character and if "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" were a hit and "Modern Family" didn't exist, I'd be saying that Braugher, Lo Truglio and Terry Crews would all be likely to earn nominations.
Working Against Him: Braugher will get his nomination. Lo Truglio will not. And Crews is stuck in my "Other Notables" slide because "Modern Family" sucks all of the air out of this category by monopolizing between three and four nomination slots. It's not fair, but such is life.
