Claire Danes, 'Homeland'
Nomination Status: Two-time defending champion remains a prohibitive favorite until somebody takes the crown.
In Her Favor: Claire Danes has three Emmy wins in four years, including two straight wins in this category for "Homeland." In the wildly uneven third season, Danes played real madness, feigned madness and saw a loved one die before her eyes. This was not a complacent season for Carrie Mathison or for Claire Danes and she can't be accused of resting on her laurels. If you still like Danes' now-notorious cry-face, Season 3 saw no decline in quality by your standards.
Working Against Her: As much as Emmy voters like Claire Danes, Golden Globe voters may like her even more, so it was a shock to see Danes go from consecutive wins to no nomination at all this year. It's not Danes' fault that Carrie has been so perpetually emotional over the first three seasons of "Homeland" that we now look at her moves in the most heightened of scenes and if we don't shrug, maybe we aren't quite as moved as we once were. "Homeland" and Danes would bother benefit from a little more variation in Season 4, but for the purposes of this nomination, we're looking at another high octane season of Self-Destructive Bi-Polar Carrie. I assume that some viewers will have begun to tune Danes out by now, but I'm assuming enough people are still moved to get her another nomination.
