Taylor Schilling, 'Orange is the New Black'
Nomination Status: The easiest, safest and most inevitable way to recognize "Orange Is The New Black."
In Her Favor: Say you're a Golden Globe or Emmy voter and you're looking at a tremendous series in which most of the actors are African-American or Latina thespians who you've never seen before outside of "Law & Order" repeats. What easier way to honor the show than to nominate the attractive blonde actress you vaguely recognize from that failed NBC nursing show, that bad movie with Zac Efron and that worse movie based on the Ayn Rand book? This isn't to say that Taylor Schilling isn't great on "Orange Is The New Black." I actually think she's wildly underrated because people confuse "not liking" Piper with exactly the sort of ambiguity that Jenji Kohan's writing and Taylor Schilling's performance WANT you to have. You're supposed to think she's a spoiled princess. You're supposed to watch as she changes. And when you get to the first season finale, you're supposed to believe the journey Piper took. I sure did. Schilling would/will be a deserving nominee, but don't think that she isn't also a "path of least resistance" choice for Emmy voters.
Working Against Her: Schilling was also a "path of least resistance" choice for the HFPA, but she was on the drama side for the Globes. That's a tougher field and she was able to break in, but it means that she's unproven as an awards contender on the comedy side.
