Mindy Kaling, 'The Mindy Project'
Nomination Status: Honoring this writer-producer-star would be a clean way to recognize "Mindy" in general. If you wanted to, I mean.
In Her Favor: "The Mindy Project" took big creative steps forward in its second season and it did that despite still not fully figuring out its ongoing issues with supporting cast utilization. Mostly, "The Mindy Project" was better because they figured out better things to do with and around Mindy and Mindy Kaling deserves a ton of credit for that as a writer, producer and as a star. For submission episodes, I'd tell people to look at the show's last episode before its unplanned spring hiatus ("The Desert") and then its first episode back ("French Me, You Idiot") for good examples at how well Mindy can do both the broad physical stuff, but also the subtler romantic-comedy stuff. The TCA Awards were able to give Kaling a nomination for Individual Achievement in Comedy, which reflects all of the hats she wears. The Emmys can't do that, but... This would be something.
Working Against Her: "The Mindy Project" received zero Emmy nominations. Not even for the clucking chickens who perform the theme song. Emmy voters just aren't feeling it.
