'Downton Abbey,' PBS
Nomination Status: Two straight nominations in this category and an additional Movie/Miniseries nod put "Downton" on the Emmy default list.
In Its Favor: See above. "Downton Abbey" is in a position in which until there's an outward sign of fatigue or attrition, I just pencil it in for a nomination every year. Last year saw "Downton Abbey" get writing and directing nominations, plus four acting nods and a Drama Series nomination. This year broke ratings records for PBS despite what I assume was also a record amount of piracy.
Working Against It: I don't know anybody who thought that Season 3 was "Downton Abbey" at its peak and that *may* be why "Downton Abbey" slipped to a lone nomination at the Golden Globes. And maybe fatigue is why the series only won one Emmy last year -- for John Lunn's score -- and saw Maggie Smith go down in shocking defeat after consecutive wins. I don't think "Downton Abbey" is seen as being hip or current anymore, but that shouldn't be a liability with Emmy voters.
