Could Anna Gunn or Monica Potter step up against Dame Maggie Smith?
Adelaide Clemens of 'Rectify'
Adelaide Clemens, "Rectify"
Nomination Status: Sundance's well-received drama is probably too small for Emmy love.
In Her Favor: Abigail Spencer was the stand-out supporting actress for the first half of the exceptional "Rectify." But for me, in the drama's second half, I found myself more and more captivated by Adelaide Clemens, giving one of the most nuanced depictions of "faith" that you're likely to see anywhere. TV avoids religion like the plague and genuinely religious characters are usually just sketched out as zealots and the show moves on. Clemens' Tawney is more interesting than that and, thanks to the show's deliberate pace, we learn what she believes, how she believes and why she believes and we learn the ways in which that faith and belief impact the main character. Like everything in "Rectify," Clemens' performance is quiet, slow-to-unfold and well worth investing in.
Working Against Her: In a perfect world, "Rectify" would be a strong contender in five or six categories and Spencer and Clemens would both be in the mix for nominations. I doubt we're in that world.
