Could Anna Gunn or Monica Potter step up against Dame Maggie Smith?
Anna Gunn of 'Breaking Bad'
Anna Gunn, "Breaking Bad"
Nomination Status: Should build on last year's surprise nod.
In Her Favor: After a couple years of being snubbed, Anna Gunn broke into the Emmy field last year as it became harder and harder for the "I hate Skyler because... WAAAAAAH" contingent to be heard over the "Geez, she just keeps holding her own with Bryan Cranston" contingent. And as good as Gunn was in the fourth season of "Breaking Bad," she was many times better in the first half of Season 5, as Skyler's reactions to her husband's increased darkness took on a darkness of their own. If you have any doubts on Gunn: A) You haven't been watching "Breaking Bad," so why are we even having this conversation and B) I give you the Rian Johnson-direct "Fifty-One" with "What are you waiting for?" "For the CANCER TO COME BACK." If Gunn is nominated again and picks "Fifty-One" as her submission episode, she really ought to be a favorite to win this category [depending completely on the nomination or lack thereof for Monica Potter].
Working Against Her: Whatever caused Emmy voters not to nominate Gunn for the two previous seasons could still linger. It shouldn't linger. She should be a no-brainer. But Emmy voters do strange things and have done strange things with Gunn before.
