Could Anna Gunn or Monica Potter step up against Dame Maggie Smith?
Annet Mahendru of 'The Americans'
Annet Mahendru, "The Americans"
Nomination Status: Benefits if "The Americans" has broad Emmy support, which certainly could happen, but it would have to be REALLY broad to help Mahendru.
In Her Favor: Chances are pretty good that you'd never seen (or remembered) Annet Mahendru before her role as double or triple or quadruple agent Nina on FX's "The Americans" and chances are good that after an episode or two, you started trying really hard to remember her name for future reference. That's the sign of a vivid, career-making performance by a young actress whose credits were mostly "wife" or "girlfriend" before she started on "The Americans." Nina could have been forgettable or familiar, instead she was an interesting and sometimes confounding character who ended up being so rich the writers wanted to keep her around.
Working Against Her: If "The Americans" is a big favorite for Emmy voters, they'll nominate the show and Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys and Noah Emmerich, but how far down the ballot will they go? The answer is, "Probably not this far down." Fortunately, Annet Mahendru will have other chances at recognition.
