Could Anna Gunn or Monica Potter step up against Dame Maggie Smith?
Emily Mortimer of 'The Newsroom'
Emily Mortimer, "The Newsroom"
Nomination Status: Benefits if "The Newsroom" has broad Emmy support, which probably won't happen.
In Her Favor: In the "Newsroom" pilot, Aaron Sorkin introduces Emily Mortimer's character as a strong, capable, independent woman who's brilliant at her job and refuses to be cowed by the men in her life. It's a potentially great role for the highly respected Mortimer.
Working Against Her: Unfortunately, that character is never spotted again and Mortimer's character becomes a feeble foil destined to learn Valuable Lessons from Jeff Daniels' Will McAvoy, while teaching almost no lessons of her own. This role is, unfortunately, not so great for Mortimer. It is, however, pretty much definitely a female lead role, so Mortimer benefits from being something like a lead actress in a supporting category, even if she suffers from being a weird projection of Sorkin's various insecurities.
