Could Anna Gunn or Monica Potter step up against Dame Maggie Smith?
Kelly Macdonald of 'Boardwalk Empire'

Nomination Status: We're in the "Deposed Former Nominee" section of this gallery now.
In Her Favor: A 2011 Emmy nominee for this role (and a 2006 winner for "The Girl in the Cafe"), Macdonald's performance as Margaret Schroeder has only become strong as the character has become increasingly pragmatic and disillusioned about her ties with Nucky and her tenuous place in the New World. Like so many supporting characters in ensemble cable dramas, Margaret occasionally vanishes entirely, but when she's given storylines, she functions as a full female lead on "Boardwalk Empire" and, at times, there are even indications that Margaret could turn out to be the hero of "Boardwalk Empire," or at least the relatable character you want to root for. Macdonald also has a solid film career going with "Brave" and "Anna Karenina" and the final "Harry Potter" film in recent years.
Working Against Her: After only one nomination, Macdonald dropped out of the Emmy field last year. If there had been better performances storming in to take her place or if all interest in "Boardwalk Empire" had vanished entirely, you'd think her absence was justified, but that really wasn't the case. She just went from having Emmy momentum to not having it overnight. And once you lose Emmy momentum, it's really hard to regain.
