Can Sofia Vergara or Betty White dethrone Julie Bowen?
Merritt Wever of 'Nurse Jackie'
Merritt Wever, "Nurse Jackie"
Nomination Status: After a well-deserved nomination last year, she'll have to fight to return.
In Her Favor: Merritt Wever's Emmy nomination last year was a welcome surprise, but it was also a tiny bit confusing. She wasn't any better in the fourth "Nurse Jackie" season than in the first three and she wasn't any worse this year than she was last year. Wever's sweetly loopy Zoey has always been one of the best parts of "Nurse Jackie" and it has always seemed to me that if you liked the show enough to keep nominating Edie Falco for things, surely you were paying enough attention to also realize how brilliant the Jackie/Zoey scenes have always been. It just took Emmy voters long enough. Will they notice this year? Wever will definitely get a bump from the visibility of her end-of-season arc on "New Girl."
Working Against Her: Theoretically, nothing should be working against her. Wever had another season of good work on "Nurse Jackie," though Zoey's increased professional confidence has made her less bumbling, which has made her less of an easy source for humor. I'm really flipping coins here between a half-dozen performances.
