Bobby Cannavale of 'Boardwalk Empire'
Bobby Cannavale, "Boardwalk Empire"
Nomination Status: Emmy favorite actor + Emmy favorite show + Juicy role = Nomination
In His Favor: It was a little surprising to see Bobby Cannavale in this category given that close-ended one-season Big Bad-type roles have been frequently pushed to the Guest categories in recent years and when it comes to Big Bad roles, they don't get much bigger or much badder than Gyp Rosetti. Prone sexual perversity, intriguing fashion choices and flying off into red-faced fits of rage, Gyp caused a lot of trouble for Nucky on "Boardwalk Empire" last season and Cannavale developed a character prone to operatic swells of emotion and a paucity of subtlety that seemed completely appropriate. Cannavale won an Emmy for "Will & Grace" and was nominated for another for "Nurse Jackie" last year and given Emmy appreciation of "Boardwalk Empire," this feels like the sort of role and performance that really ought to be total kibble.
Working Against Him: The difficulty of the category is probably the thing that would cost Cannavale a nod. If Emmy voters prefer hot new shows like "House of Cards" and "The Americans" over recently hot, somewhat older shows like "Boardwalk Empire" and "Downton Abbey," then Cannavale and the gentleman from my next slide could easily get pushed out in favor of fresh blood.
