Mandy Patinkin of 'Homeland'
Mandy Patinkin, "Homeland"
Nomination Status: Probably the first in line to capitalize on attrition.
In His Favor: I don't know anything, but I'm betting that three-time Emmy nominee Mandy Patinkin finished either seventh or eighth when nominations were tallied last year. "Homeland" had enough support to win most of 2012's big Emmys, but not enough to get Mandy into a stacked category. It's likely that Emmy support for "Homeland" will continue into Year 2, just because that's the way Emmy voters work and while many things went downhill in Season 2, Patinkin was strong as ever, particularly in the early and late episodes in which his concern for Carrie was at its most heartbreakingly paternal. Actually, forget those episodes. Check out Saul's visit to prison in "The Clearing." Then just give Patinkin his nomination. It doesn't hurt that Patinkin snagged a Golden Globe nod here in the winter.
Working Against Him: Because he wasn't nominated last year, Patinkin has to be considered a question mark. Why didn't Emmy voters embrace him last year? What if Emmy voters welcome the vacated slots in this category and fill them with performances from shows even shinier and newer? What if voters want to penalize "Homeland" for not letting Mandy sing? The mind boggles...
