Guillermo Diaz of 'Scandal'
Guillermo Diaz, "Scandal"
Nomination Status: A showy supporting performance on a show on the cusp of an awards breakthrough.
In His Favor: So, who's gonna be the first "Scandal" performer to pick up a major award nomination? You know it's coming after a season that saw "Scandal" go from an under-watched guilty pleasure to a full-blown phenomenon. Might it be Guillermo Diaz? Well, I give you "Seven Fifty-Two," the origin story for Diaz's Huck and one of the nicest episodic gifts a TV writer could possibly give a character actor. In 42 minutes, Diaz got to show every imaginable shading of a character from "giddy with love" to "shaking in a traumatized mess in a cage." Diaz would certainly make my Top 10 and he'd be really close to my Top 6 if I had a ballot.
Working Against Him: It's hard for any network show, even one with the popular momentum of "Scandal," to break through with Emmy voters, especially in a category this full of cable standouts. Diaz may have the Emmy episode, but Kerry Washington has the profile that Emmy voters may want to reward and even she's going to have a hard time.
