Jim Carter of 'Downton Abbey'
Jim Carter, "Downton Abbey"
Nomination Status: After a nomination last year, you can't rule him out.
In His Favor: Although he only made my "Honorable Mention" field in last year's pre-nominations gallery, Carter surprised many observers with his recognition last summer. While it's hard, in the balance, to remember much that Carter did through most of the show's third season, I'd invite you to flash back to The Really Bad Thing That Happened and to Carson's reactions to that and his loving reactions to several new arrivals in the household. You can also think about Carson's handling of potential scandal in later episodes. I'd never put it on par with what Aaron Paul gets to do, but if you figure that Emmy voters apparently love "Downton Abbey" and really like Carter, he had a couple moments that make him as worthy this year as he was last.
Working Against Him: This is just a much, much, much smaller part than so many of the performances Carter has to go up against here. If Emmy love for "Downton" diminishes in the slightest, Carter's nomination is sure to vanish as well.
