John Slattery of 'Mad Men'
John Slattery, "Mad Men"
Nomination Status: Never rule out a four-time nominee.
In His Favor: John Slattery has earned four Emmy nods for "Mad Men" and that means that I'm prone to consider him more likely to get nominations than other people from the cast, even if other people might have had better seasons. I'd say Vincent Kartheiser has had more Emmy-worthy moments this season than Slattery has, at least in front of the camera. But Slattery is admired, reliable and he also has become one of the Emmy-winning drama's finer directors. Last year, Slattery got squeezed out for Jared Harris, but I assume that, like Mandy Patinkin, he was in the group right behind the eventual nominees. Maybe with Harris gone, Slattery moves back up, especially using the two-hour season premiere that featured the death of Roger's mother.
Working Against Him: This just hasn't been the sort of season that would seem to position Slattery for a nomination. He's had a couple very good episodes, but he's mostly been used for stealing a scene or two per episode since the premiere. I never object to recognition for Slattery, but it would seem that there are actors with bigger parts on up-and-coming shows who are more likely to crack the Top 6 this year.
