Walton Goggins of 'Justified'
Walton Goggins, "Justified"
Nomination Status: Dropped out last year, but could bounce back.
In His Favor: After a nomination two years ago, it looked like Emmy voters had finally caught on to how great Goggins is after having missed out on his brilliance in the later years of "The Shield." Then, after one nomination... Poof. Goggins was gone, replaced by two butlers from "Downton Abbey," which is exactly the sort of thing that would piss Boyd Crowder off. I'm not sure that Goggins was "better" in the fourth season of "Justified" than he was in his unnominated third season, but he was every bit as good, with a strong early arc going head-to-head with a revivalist preacher and strong late work that accentuated his devotion to Joelle Carter's Ava, an arc that brought out some of Carter's best work. Perhaps Goggins gets a tiny bump from whatever visibility he was afforded by his "Django Unchained" role, but I'd hesitate to suggest that boosts his chances by much.
Working Against Him: Goggins has now been not-nominated for his "Justified" performance more seasons than he's been nominated and including all of those "Shield" snubs, you can imply that while voters are aware of him, he's not a favorite. This is a pretty silly, because he should be a perennial nominee.
