Echo Kellum of 'Ben and Kate'
Echo Kellum, "Ben and Kate"
Nomination Status: Lower, sadly, than even the guy from "The Neighbors"
In His Favor: Only Echo Kellum and Dakota Johnson even bothered to submit themselves for Emmy consideration, which probably is an apt reflection of the chances that Emmy voters will honor a FOX comedy that bombed out after half a season, but it's still a pity when you want to remind people of one of the most likable new comedies of the year. I would have loved to put Lucy Punch in my Supporting Actress gallery, because she was very funny on "Ben and Kate" and will eventually find a true breakout role. And I feel the same about Echo Kellum who, unlike Punch, was a complete unknown for me before "Ben and Kate" started. Because Nat Faxon's Ben was prone to wacky schemes, Kellum got to do a lot of acting-within-acting and he consistently shined. I don't suspect that NBC's "Sean Saves the World" is going to be the smash hit that introduces the rest of the world to Kellum, but I hope that Emmy voters get plenty more opportunities to notice him.
Working Against Him: Nobody watched "Ben and Kate" and it's been six months since anybody even had the chance to ignore "Ben and Kate." That show and this performance are waaaaaay off the radar.
