DJ Qualls of 'Legit'
DJ Qualls, "Legit"
Nomination Status: Too small a show to really have a chance.
In His Favor: Playing a character with muscular dystrophy, DJ Qualls has a role that's simultaneously insanely showy, but also virtually immobile. That means that Qualls has to do almost all of his acting with his face and intonation and working with that limited arsenal, he's made a character who's funny, sympathetic and likable. It's basically the linchpin performance for the entire show, because if you don't believe the warmth that Qualls' Billy has for star Jim Jeffries, nothing else will work. And you do believe it.
Working Against Him: This is the small screen version of what John Hawkes did in "The Sessions." Hawkes received rave reviews, but somehow he couldn't get an Oscar nomination. It will be less of a crime if Qualls is shut out, but I suspect it'll be for similar reasons: These are character actors giving appropriately subtle performances in roles that could have been much broader and probably more award-friendly. I respect this version a lot more.
