Michelle Dockery of 'Downton Abbey'
Michelle Dockery, "Downton Abbey"
Nomination Status: Unless Emmy love for "Downton Abbey" has chilled entirely, it'll be hard to squeeze Dockery out.
In Her Favor: In addition to her Emmy nomination here last year, Dockery has recent Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations to her credit, suggesting that her position in this category has become at least somewhat entrenched. And certainly there was nothing that Dockery did this past season that was worse than her very solid Season 2 performance. There was the Sybil arc and the fertility arc and all sorts of romantic stuff with Matthew. So if Emmy voters thought Dockery was worthy last year, there's no reason they shouldn't still find her worthy this year.
Working Against Her: It's mostly the difficulty of the category. "Downton Abbey" was an Emmy force last year with a second season that many people felt was weaker than the third, so why should Emmy enthusiasm wane? Well, in this case the answer would just be that Keri Russell, Tatiana Maslany and several other new contenders just have more to do than Dockery. That would be a "fair" decision for voters to make.
