Claire Danes of 'Homeland'
Claire Danes, "Homeland"
Nomination Status: Last year's runaway winner is still probably the favorite.
In Her Favor: From the Emmy to the Golden Globe to the SAG Award to the TCA Award, you'd be hard-pressed to find any legitimate TV award for dramatic acting that didn't go to Claire Danes last year. And guess what? Carrie Mathison continues to struggle in the second season and Danes continued to give a performance of almost painful intensity. If anything, the writers found more reasons for Danes to break down sobbing in the second season, occasionally to the detriment of dramatic flow and whatnot. Just because the writers sometimes made a mess of Carrie and "Homeland" in Season 2 doesn't mean that Danes didn't shine no matter what she was given. I love many of the other actresses in this category, but if all we're talking about is earning a nomination, Danes is as comfortable and unimpeachable as they come.
Working Against Her: Fatigue. Because "Homeland" came close on the heels of the juggernaut that was "Temple Grandin," it feels like Danes has been giving award acceptance speeches non-stop for the past three years. She has been. That shouldn't get in the way of another Emmy nomination. And it won't.
