Emmy Rossum of 'Shameless'
Emmy Rossum, "Shameless"
Nomination Status: Speaking of shame, every year Emmy voters neglect Emmy, the shame grows.
In Her Favor: If I were listing my own preferences, Emmy Rossum and Claire Danes would be No. 1 and No. 2, probably followed by Tatiana Maslany. It's an ongoing travesty that no award-giving organization has been able to come through and notice the work Rossum is doing as Fiona Gallagher. And she's making it easier and easier for voters to notice by getting better and better. The episode in which Fiona went to court to try to get custody of her siblings was big, bold, passionate acting of the highest order and it's not like Rossum was a slacker in the season's other episodes. Rossum was a revelation when "Shameless" first premiered and each subsequent seen has just been a confirmation.
Working Against Her: I dunno. Showtime is obviously good at getting Emmy attention. Look at "Homeland" last year. Look at all of the success for various actresses in the "comedy" category. I don't get how Showtime isn't able to, at the very least, get Emmy Rossum into the Golden Globe field with the hope that that might ripple to other groups. Shrug. If it hasn't happened yet, it probably won't happen.
