Vera Farmiga of 'Bates Motel'
Vera Farmiga, "Bates Motel"
Nomination Status: Oscar nominee will need a strong push to make the field.
In Her Favor: There's a lot in her favor, actually. The "Up in the Air" star has a strong film pedigree that includes both mainstream hits and well-nurtured indies. She's paid her dues and in Norma Bates, she's got an absolutely dream of a character. She gets to be silly. She gets to be tragic. She gets to be scary and emotional. At times she gets to play pure camp and then at times she's impressively subtle. And she's playing a character who's simultaneously iconic, but unassociated with any previous performers or characterizations. She's having fun here and it's fun to watch.
Working Against Her: If "Bates Motel" were on Showtime or AMC or HBO, I'd say Farmiga might be a lock for a nomination, but not only is A&E relatively unproven at the scripted awards thing, but Farmiga is going against an assortment of newly added stars from Emmy power players. Then again, why should uncertainty about A&E's ability to make an Emmy push be greater than uncertainty about Netflix or BBC America? Dunno.
