Melissa McCarthy of 'Mike & Molly'
Melissa McCarthy, "Mike & Molly"
Nomination Status: Does she have enough movie star mystique for one more nomination?
In Her Favor: The success of "Bridesmaids" helped push Melissa McCarthy to a nomination and a win two years ago and that, in turn, helped push her to an Oscar nomination, which helped carry her to a second Emmy nomination last year. The surprise success of the critically reviled "Identity Thief" was credited almost entirely to audience love for McCarthy and there's a good chance that "The Heat" will continue that movie hot streak and that that will push her to one more Emmy nomination. I'm not convinced that Emmy voters are even watching "Mike & Molly." I'm not watching, but advertisements suggest that it's been business as usual.
Working Against Her: With audiences willingly paying 10+ dollars to see McCarthy on the big screen, CBS has continued to hope that "Mike & Molly" would evolve from a steady performer into a real hit. It hasn't. Instead, the most recent renewal is for a TBD midseason slot and, at this point, McCarthy may be ready to move over to movies full-time. All of this is mostly to say that Melissa McCarthy keeps getting Emmy nods because people like Melissa McCarthy and not because of the show she's on, which can only last for so long. Right?
