Mindy Kaling of 'The Mindy Project'
Mindy Kaling, "The Mindy Project"
Nomination Status: Emmy voters may remember Kaling's It Girl status, even if nobody watched her show..
In Her Favor: As a bestselling author, acclaimed TV writer and beloved supporting actress, Mindy Kaling seemed poised to blow up with the premiere of "The Mindy Project" in the fall. Nobody watched. Not the pilot and not later in the season. If they had, they would have seen a show that improved as it went along and a really fine leading performance. It makes sense that Mindy Kaling would know how to write a show to many of Mindy Kaling's strengths, so that meant lots of pratfalls, lots of ego-free bad costuming and, at times, some study work as a rom-com lead. Ratings show that "The Mindy Project" and Kaling may be an acquired taste, but it's a taste that works for me.
Working Against Her: FOX positioned "Mindy Project" after "New Girl" both to get the ratings bump from its most popular comedy, but also to suggest that Zooey Deschanel and Mindy Kaling should be intertwined when you think of hip, happening network TV leading ladies. Instead, Deschanel's show didn't give "Mindy" much support and the award buzz is still solely in Zooey's corner.
