William H. Macy of 'Shameless'
William H. Macy, "Shameless"
Nomination Status: Even in his best season, Emmy voters probably won't notice.
In His Favor: William H. Macy is simultaneously probably the main male actor on "Shameless," but also truly a supporting actor on what is definitely not "his" show. So I sometimes wonder if part of what's keeping Macy from getting Emmy recognition for "Shameless" is being miscategorized. Of course, Emmy voters are also consistently ignoring Emmy Rossum in what absolutely *is* a "lead" performance and is more indisputably deserving of recognition. So really, Emmy voters just don't watch "Shameless." Well, if they did, they would have seen Macy's best performance to date. Look at the arc with Carl's fake-cancer or the custody arc or the gay marriage arc. Frank Gallagher kept doing worse and worse things this season, but for some reason Macy was able to seem more grounded doing those things this season, avoiding the "He's in a different show" syndrome that sometimes has plagued the character. Is Macy getting a better grasp on Frank? Are the writers? Who knows.
Working Against Him: I think I said everything that was working against Macy in the paragraph that was supposed to be about things working in his favor. Oh well.
