Peter Krause of 'Parenthood'
Peter Krause, "Parenthood"
Nomination Status: Another example of category selection gone awry.
In His Favor: In the past, I've accepted that if "Parenthood" had a male lead, it was probably Peter Krause, so it was totally his prerogative to submit himself in this buzzsaw of a category, even if he was never going to get a nomination. This was Krause's best "Parenthood" season and his work in certain episodes -- "What To My Wondering Eyes" is probably his most nomination-worthy hour -- was devastating. When dealing with his wife's battle with cancer, Krause's Adam operated on every step of the emotional spectrum, sometimes pouring forth grief and frustration like an open wound, and sometimes bottling everything up and just letting you see his pain and his attempts to keep things together. Great work.
Working Against Him: Great work. But it's great work in a storyline that isn't primarily his storyline. By any definition, Krause's performance this season, moreso than any previous season, was a supporting performance. Monica Potter, who had the central performance in the arc, is submitted as supporting, though, and I hold out a finger-crossing hope that she'll pull off a nomination. Given the circumstances of both the season and the character and the category, I think Krause would have been smarter to submit as supporting as well and hope to piggyback into the field with Potter. He probably wouldn't have, but he has no chance in this category. Again, though... Great work.
