Aden Young of 'Rectify'
Aden Young, "Rectify"
Nomination Status: If somehow every member of the TV Academy actually watches the blissfully short first season of "Rectify," he could be a real player. Chuckle.
In His Favor: As star-studded as it may be, Aden Young makes my Top 6 in this category. Without hesitation. Depending on the day you catch me, I might tell you that he'd be my top choice. Over Bryan Cranston. Over Damian Lewis. Over Kevin Spacey. That's really all you need to know, at least from my POV. This is a soulful, complicated, intense performance of the highest order, but it's a performance that you have to live with for a few hours, lest you somehow make the mistake of thinking it's a quieter version of Billy Bob Thornton's work in "Slingblade." The confusion and pain and introspection in Young's performance makes it one of the year's true revelations.
Working Against Him: "Rectify" was renewed, but it's not like it was a big hit. Or a tiny hit. It made ripples, but only amongst the smallest subset of critics. In a just world, Aden Young would be getting the same drum-beating support as Tatiana Maslany. Well, I'll bang the drum slowly and solo.
