Hugh Bonneville of 'Downton Abbey'
Hugh Bonneville, "Downton Abbey"
Nomination Status: Nominated last year, but surely he's gonna fall out of the field, right?
In His Favor: The low placement in this gallery really shouldn't take away from the fact that Hugh Bonneville was really good on "Downton Abbey" last season. I'd say he was better last season than in Season 2 when he was nominated, somewhat surprisingly, for an Emmy. The Lady Sybil storyline and its aftermath were probably Bonneville's best work on the series. If he were in the Supporting Actor field, I'd say he had a really good shot and would probably prevent Dan Stevens from getting a nomination.
Working Against Him: He's submitted as a Lead, which he mostly isn't. He's mostly one supporting piece within an ensemble and he just doesn't have a body of work that compares with the gentlemen in the top tier of this category. Look at those six actors who were nominated last year. Look at the four or five new actors who could make strong claims that they deserve to be nominated this year. Who's gonna drop out so that a Kevin Spacey can move up? Bonneville is sure as heck the most obvious answer.
