Timothy Olyphant of 'Justified'
Timothy Olyphant, "Justified"
Nomination Status: In many years, this former nominee would be poised to move back into the field.
In His Favor: It seems like Timothy Olyphant has been nominated for his "Justified" work a few times already. He has not. In fact, his 2011 Emmy nod is, along with a 2011 TCA Award nod, pretty much the only recognition he's gotten for his work as Raylan Givens, reminding us once again that this is a Golden Age for leading man performances on TV dramas. And this was a really good year for Olyphant on "Justified." The character faced fatherhood as his relationship with his own deadbeat dad came to a head. I'm not going to say this was Olyphant's best season. At times, in fact, it was probably the most stoically Eastwood-y he has ever been, but he nailed any emotional moment he was given, no matter how complicated and conflicted he happened to be.
Working Against Him: Margo Martindale was the rising tide who lifted all ships to Emmy attention in 2011, as Olyphant, Walton Goggins and Jeremy Davies all picked up nods mostly by virtue of their proximity to Mags Bennett. Although Davies actually won an Emmy last year for returning as Dickie Bennett, the drama has mostly struggled to get any traction. Maybe if "Justified" goes back to the Big Bad model for its next season, that'll be what it takes to get Olyphant and company back in the Emmy tuxedos?
