Steve Buscemi of 'Boardwalk Empire'
Steven Buscemi, "Boardwalk Empire"
Nomination Status: No major award-giving group has excluded this performance so far.
In His Favor: Steve Buscemi has three Golden Globe nods, three SAG Awards nods (and two wins) and two Emmy nominations for "Boardwalk Empire." As far as those groups go, he's 8-for-8 in terms of eligibility and nominations. So why would you quibble about yet another Emmy nod? I sure wouldn't. Because of the ensemble nature of the show, long stretches can turn Nucky Thompson into a supporting player, but when Nucky gets to be the focus, Buscemi never fails to shine. This past season, Buscemi's arc really kicked in after the attempt on his life and the subsequent episode, which included some disturbing hallucinations, ranks among his best work on the lauded show. If Emmy voters stuck around for the season-ending episodes, Buscemi will almost certainly return
Working Against Him: The only thing going against Buscemi is the waxing and waning of hype and the way that often steers Emmy voting. It's been a few years since "Boardwalk Empire" was the cool new kid on the block and this category is regularly being inundated by cool new kids. In a deep and competitive field, Buscemi is not the nominee most likely to fall from the ranks, but he's probably the second-most-likely.
