Nomination Status: This year's animated series bucking for a Comedy Series nomination.
In Its Favor: To me, the season-opening "Bob's Burgers" crossover sequence could be the funniest five minutes of TV of the whole year, or at least the hardest I've laughed at any five minutes. Of course, if I had my druthers, "Bob's Burgers" might be competing for and nominated in this category, so what do I know? Chugging along through its fourth season, "Archer" remains a precise mixture of impeccably cast and delivered vocal performance, cutting edge animation and espionage parody that is often played more straight than most actual spy movies or TV shows. And based solely on my twitter feed, "Archer" is also possibly the most quotable TV show since "The Simpsons." Because of all of the entrenched, traditional veterans in the animation category, "Archer" has had a really hard time getting any recognition, landing only a voice nod for H. Jon Benjamin in 2010. At that point, category-jumping makes as much sense as anything.
Working Against It: "Family Guy" pulled it off once but, in general, it's really hard for an animated show to break into the live-action hierarchy in this category. Compared to "Archer," "Family Guy" is practically "NCIS" when it comes to audience and visibility, so the "Archer" challenge is even greater and, I would say, probably too great.
