Nomination Status: Just too underwatched and unusual to make the cut.
In Its Favor: "Enlightened" *may* be heading for my Top 6 out of all the shows that aired this year in any genre -- it's still early, I don't want to guarantee it that kind of end-of-year placement -- but I don't know if I can say it would make my Outstanding Comedy Top 6. "Enlightened" absolutely makes me laugh and cringe at times, But more often, "Enlightened" produced more serious responses, emotional and philosophical responses. I think "Enlightened" and "Rectify" might make a great programming double-bill of great shows that aspire to great intellect and are definitely too strange for Emmy voters. In my perfect world, Mike White would be nearly as Emmy decorated this year as Lena Dunham and Louis C.K. He checks all of the same writing/directing/acting/producing boxes as those two Emmy favorites and he does it nearly as well. In fact, I could make up an Emmy ballot that was nearly all multiple nominations for Dunham, Louis C.K., White, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Just let those five go head-to-head for absolutely everything.
Working Against It: There are too many good laugh-out-loud comedies out there for Emmy voters to ever need to consider a comedy that produces this sort of atypical response.
