Kelly Macdonald of 'Boardwalk Empire'
Kelly Macdonald, "Boardwalk Empire"
Nomination Status: Another strong season for this Emmy winner should keep her in the field
In Her Favor: Margaret Schroeder went through an intriguing journey last season, as her eyes continued to be opened to the realities of the man who appeared to be her family's savior. Whether you focus on Margaret's visit to NYC to reunite with her long-estranged family or the increased self-preservation instincts that drive her actions in the finale, she continued to be a meaty character, excellently played by Macdonald. In fact, since I like to be pragmatic about these things, there's little doubt that Kelly Macdonald could have easily submitted as Lead Actress in a drama, albeit with a lesser chance of being nominated. In Season 1, "Boardwalk" was Nucky's story. In Season 2, it was a split with Nucky and Jimmy, but Margaret was a viable third lead. Anyway, she's probably in the right category and because she had episodes in which she was a focus, Macdonald has far more material to work with, submission-wise, than most of her rivals.
Working Against Her: "Boardwalk Empire" had more awards heat in its first season than its second, though it helps that Macdonald received a second straight Golden Globe nomination and that the series won a second straight SAG Award for ensemble.
