Emmy Nomination Preview 2012 - Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama
With Margo Martindale gone, will this be Christina Hendricks' year?
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama
Last Year's Nominees:
Margo Martindale, "Justified"
Christine Baranski, "The Good Wife"
Michelle Forbes, "The Killing"
Christina Hendricks," "Mad Men"
Kelly Macdonald, "Boardwalk Empire"
Archie Panjabi, "The Good Wife"
Attrition: We'll have a new winner this year if nothing else, because Martindale was a one-year wonder here (though she's eligible, but won't be nominated, for "A Gifted Man"). I'm also reasonably confident that Michelle Forbes isn't going to be back after the writers sent her character off on a spiritual quest and forgot she existed. That leaves two open spots, at least one of which is certain to go to a winner from last year who finds herself in a new category. So that leaves one nomination that could be an utter free-for-all.

June 21, 2012 at 4:29AM EST Reply to CommentI've just started watching The Good Wife, so I might not've seen enough to make a fair judgment, but does anyone else not see the big deal with Archie Panjabi? She seems entirely one note and lifeless to me, and her accent is constantly breaking.
Sareeta I agree. I only watched her in the first season, but found her acting to be pretty bad. The accent doesn't bother me.
June 21, 2012 at 6:38AM ESTevolution1085 I've never understood the fascination with her being this sexual goddess people through themselves at without thinking... and the superhero stuff they give her with regards to her past is just laughable.

June 21, 2012 at 5:45AM EST Reply to CommentWhy did Katherine McPhee submit as supporting? She EMBODIED Marilyn Monroe. I was utterly entranced, at times stupefied, by her performance. I found myself daydreaming elaborate dance routines in the middle of conversations with my co-workers, who were confused at my jazz hands until I explained to them — it's Katherine. She should be going up against Julianna Margulies and Claire Danes. Heck, she could go up against Bryan Cranston, Peter Dinklage and the entire cast of "Modern Family." She would win. Katherine McPhee will win all the awards.
Son of Mecha Mummy You might want to get that elaborate daydream hallucination thing checked with a doctor.
June 21, 2012 at 8:33AM EST
Katherine McPhee doesn't deserve an Emmy for Smash, she deserves a special Oscar, or perhaps a Nobel Prize.
June 21, 2012 at 10:07AM ESTvelocityknown Pretty sure this is sarcasm. Wasn't sure until the Bryan Cranston, Peter Dinklage stuff to be fair.
June 21, 2012 at 10:10AM ESTSon of Mecha Mummy I know! I was playing along. That comment first made me boggle and then made me laugh.

June 21, 2012 at 7:17AM EST Reply to CommentI wish Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner were at least mentioned. They gave great performances. It's hard to believe how young the actresses are.
John W Agree.
June 21, 2012 at 10:11AM ESTdan Sareeta - Maise's mentioned. Sophie's not. I certainly could have and certainly think she's worthy of mention... But Maise's mentioned.
June 21, 2012 at 11:29AM EST-Daniel
John She's mentioned, but she's relegated to the "others considered category" behind 20 other actresses, which I find profoundly depressing. She deserves a nomination. Hell, I had her as the second-best supporting actress of the year behind Maggie Smith. But I haven't seen hardly any critics putting her on their ballots. Sepinwall has her on his hypothetical ballot, though, so at least there's that.
June 21, 2012 at 12:10PM ESTJohn I forgot to mention: my other nominees would be Lena Headey (who had the best submission episode of anyone with "Blackwater), Kiernan Shipka, Christina Hendricks and Archie Panjabi.
June 21, 2012 at 12:13PM ESTMike But you can't blame Dan for that John. He's doing predictions, not his personal choices, and as much as you (and I, and presumably Dan as well) like Maisie William's performance, she's absolutely not getting nominated. If Kiernan Shipka didn't get nominated last year (in terms of great child actresses) and if Emilia Clarke didn't get nominated last year (in terms of good performances on Game of Thrones), then I just don't see how Williams gets a nomination.
June 21, 2012 at 1:06PM ESTJohn Oh, I don't want it to appear that I'm criticizing Dan. I agree that he's just making projections to the best of his ability. I just find it depressing that apparently the Emmy voters are going to completely ignore her.
June 21, 2012 at 6:51PM ESTMike Yeah, I can sympathize with you on that front, but the Emmys are all about complacency, as Dan's gallery shows. I am definitely not looking forward to this category nomination wise, unless a miracle happens and some combination of Headey, Baccarin, or Shipka get on the ballot in place of Byrne or Baranski (or Huston *shudder*), but I doubt it. At least maybe Christina Hendricks might finally win one of these things...
June 21, 2012 at 7:25PM ESTSareeta Sorry, I didn't notice that Maisie was listed at the end. I still think she belongs in the main gallery, particularly.

June 21, 2012 at 12:27PM EST Reply to CommentI love Breaking Bad, but from Season 2 on, I've felt Skyler is the worst thing about the show. By far.
Anna Gunn is solid in the role, but I just have a hard time awarding a character who raises my ire whenever she shows up on screen.
Having said that, she'd still crack my Top 6, because as strong as Supporting Actor is, Supporting Actress is - sadly - as weak. Kudos for getting 20 slides out of it.
I think Kelly Macdonald gave the most consistently strong performance out of anybody in the field, but Christina Hendricks has the best individual episode.

June 21, 2012 at 1:44PM EST Reply to CommentA magazine puts Gretchen Mol on its cover and you resent HER?
dan David D. - For years after the Vanity Fair cover, it was mentioned in almost every profile of her and many reviews of movies in which she appeared as a sign of premature coronation. So do *I* resent her for it? No. Did some people? Yes.
June 21, 2012 at 1:49PM EST-Daniel
David D. I think what I was reacting to was the "WE still resent" her, which would seem to include you as the writer. Thanks for the reply.
June 21, 2012 at 3:17PM ESTdan David D. - I think I probably meant "We" in a "Global Humanity" sense, which includes us all, including you and me, even if it's not actually necessarily true. Or, alternatively, I wrote it late at night and I no longer remember the exact reasons for my phrasing...

June 21, 2012 at 1:48PM EST Reply to CommentOh god, if Angelica Huston gets a nod for THAT performance, I might just vomit. But I'm glad Rose Byrne was prominently featured as a contender here because it seems the prognosticators are putting her well out of the race. It's sad how far off the radar the show has fallen. To me, the six strongest performances would be:
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men
Kelly Macdonald, Boardwalk Empire
Rose Byrne, Damages
Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad
Lauren Graham, Parenthood
Lena Headey. Game of Thrones

June 21, 2012 at 2:48PM EST Reply to CommentDan, moving forward, would it be possible to list the respective shows after the actors names in the "Other Notable Candidates" slide? I had to look up Maisie Williams and had no idea Linda Hunt was on a current show. Thanks.
dan Leemats - Yeah, I could probably do that... Assuming I remember to...

June 21, 2012 at 9:48PM EST Reply to CommentI am curious why HBO does not submit the actresses from Treme. I know it isn't a popular series, but the performances are outstanding and isn't that what the Emmy's are supposed to reward? I would love to see Khandi Alexander and Melissa Leo get nominated. They both did really great work in season 2.
Nick If I'm not mistaken, because they aired the majority of their episodes (6 of the 11) in the previous year's eligibility period, they don't qualify this year.
June 21, 2012 at 11:57PM ESTdan Sareeta - As Nick said, all of the performances from last season of "Treme" were eligible, and therefor snubbed, for *last* year's Emmys.
June 22, 2012 at 1:26AM EST-Daniel
Sareeta Thanks for the answer. So if season 3 airs in September this year they will be able to submit for next year's Emmys?

June 21, 2012 at 11:15PM EST Reply to CommentThere are a lot of good actresses listed but not all of them had a great year, often more due to the writing on their show than any problem with their acting.
All in all, I'd go with Kiernan Shipka. She had the best combination of ace material and hitting it out of the park.
Geoff agreed.

July 20, 2012 at 2:05AM EST Reply to Commentbwahahahaha - Joanne Froggat's not even mentioned!
dan Geoff - That's some fine hindsight you've got there...
July 20, 2012 at 2:15AM ESTAlternatively, I did 10 Emmy nomination galleries. The Emmy voters nominated 61 people in those categories. Joanne Froggat's the only nominee who went entirely unmentioned in my galleries... Oh well.
