Two 'Modern Family' frontrunners return, but will older actresses crash the field?
Diane Ladd of 'Enlightened'
Diane Ladd, "Enlightened"
Nomination Status: Admired veteran is this category's most intriguing dark horse.
In Her Favor: Diane Ladd has three Oscar nominations and three Emmy nominations on her resume and she gets definite sentimental points for playing the mother to real-life daughter Laura Dern on the HBO half-hour. Here's my bottom line: If Diane Ladd gets nominated, she's going to win. No other actor in this category has a showcase piece that's as strong as the episode "Consider Helen." It's an episode that works on an actor-y level without any context, even if it required context to work on the show. You watch it and you come away going, "Gracious, she's outstanding." The challenge is going to be getting the nomination.
Working Against Her: Calling "Enlightened" a comedy is generous and calling it under-watched is even more generous. What are the chances that even the most adored of stars will get a nomination for a primarily dramatic performance on an alleged comedy that almost nobody watched? It'll be a struggle.
