Two 'Modern Family' frontrunners return, but will older actresses crash the field?
Kathryn Joosten of 'Desperate Housewives'
Kathryn Joosten, "Desperate Housewives"
Nomination Status: Two-time winner bucks for a posthumous nod.
In Her Favor: A truly beloved figure, Kathryn Joosten lost her fight with cancer at the beginning of June and there's sure to be sentiment to give one last honor to the "West Wing" and "Desperate Housewives" veteran. Joosten has, in fact, been nominated three times and won twice for her performance as Karen McCluskey on "Desperate Housewives," so this is a role that Emmy voters know and respect her for. The character got a fitting and emotional send-off on the show and this would be a chance for Hollywood to do the same for Joosten (and, to some degree, for "Housewives," which isn't likely to get much more traction in its last year on the ballot).
Working Against Her: Joosten made the jump from Guest Actress to Supporting Actress last season and wasn't able to break into the field. There also has to be some question of how many older actresses Emmy voters will want to salute here.
