Two 'Modern Family' frontrunners return, but will older actresses crash the field?
Zosia Mamet of 'Girls'
Zosia Mamet, "Girls"
Nomination Status: Even if Emmy voters really, really, really, really love girls, this is a longshot.
In Her Favor: After a couple episodes of "Girls," I mused that Zoisa Mamet appeared to be acting in a completely different show from some of the other actors. If that ever bothered me, it ceased to for one simple reason: Whichever show Shoshanna Shapiro is on, it's simultaneously side-splitting and epically cringeworthy. Shoshanna's ongoing quest to rid herself of her virginity has been more in the "cringeworthy" category (in a good way), while "Welcome to Bushwick (aka The Crackcident)" is definitely the best illustration of the side-splitting category. And I'm posting this before the "Girls" finale, but it may be her best episode yet. So she's not actually in a different show at all. I think I put Zoisa Mamet and Merritt Wever in a similar category of "Comic relief characters in shows that were already supposed to be comedies anyway."
Working Against Her: Merritt Wever has never picked up an Emmy nomination, upstaged as she is by star Edie Falco, and I suspect that Mamet's contributions to the "Girls" tableau aren't likely to be viewed as award-worthy. I disagree. But I don't have a vote.
