Two 'Modern Family' frontrunners return, but will older actresses crash the field?
Cobie Smulders of 'How I Met Your Mother'
Cobie Smulders, "How I Met Your Mother"
Nomination Status: Hugely elevated profile, plus moments of in-comedy-pathos equals Smulders' best [i.e. "still not very good"] chance to date.
In Her Favor: Granted that people are only somewhat aware that the "How I Met Your Mother" actress and the new SHIELD agent from "The Avengers" are the same person, but don't underestimate the visibility that comes from co-starring in a movie that has taken in $1.4 billion dollars worldwide to date. And don't underestimate the visibility that comes from having your show hitting ratings highs even in its seventh season. And don't underestimate the sucker-punch power of a hugely manipulative infertility story arc that left some viewers -- Sepinwall, among others -- a bit irate, but struck a chord with many fans. That's not a perfect storm, but it's as good as it gets for Smulders.
Working Against Her: "How I Met Your Mother" actually earned five Emmy nominations last year. Bet you didn't know that. But for all of the success that the show's stars have had -- Segel's a star, Radnor's a two-time Sundance sensation, Harris knows the Smurfs -- only Harris has been tapped by the Emmy fairies. Don't expect "Avengers" to punch Smulders' ticket.
