Emmy Nomination Preview 2012 - Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy

Two 'Modern Family' frontrunners return, but will older actresses crash the field?

Kristin Chenoweth of 'GCB'

Kristin Chenoweth, "GCB"

Nomination Status: Chenoweth has one Emmy for a truncated ABC show, so why not another? [Because nobody especially liked "GCB," probably.]

In Her Favor: Chenoweth has been nominated for acting Emmys four straight years, winning in 2009 after "Pushing Daisies" had already been cancelled and even earning at least one nomination for a "Glee" episode nobody remembered she was on. Emmy voters like Chenoweth and her Carlene Cockburn was an acid-tongued, sanctomonious little spitfire who still found time to sing in church on Sunday. I can easily imagine a, "Boy, it's a shame about the rest of the show, but Chenoweth is always great!" sentiment sweeping across at least a few ballots.

Working Against Her: Being the best thing about a bad show isn't a reliable path to an Emmy nomination. Yes, Chenoweth earned a nomination for a cancelled ABC show in the past, but people loved "Pushing Daisies." They don't love "GCB."
