Two 'Modern Family' frontrunners return, but will older actresses crash the field?
Naya Rivera of 'Glee'
Naya Rivera, "Glee"
Nomination Status: Frequent "Glee" MVP isn't likely to break through.
In Her Favor: Last year, Heather Morris was the "Glee" dark horse in the category, but she didn't pick up a nomination and this year she didn't even submit. Rivera was already beginning to make her presence felt last season and this season, she shined every time she was given the opportunity, which was only occasionally, do to the easily distracted "Glee" writing staff. Yes, the writing staff blundered Santana's coming-out party pretty horribly, but Rivera never faltered. Similarly, how much did we all come away from the McKinley High production of "West Side Story" wanting to see Rivera do a full production as Anita? Or was that just me?
Working Against Her: "Glee" isn't a strong enough awards force to land multiple nominations in major acting categories anymore, which means that as long as Jane Lynch is allowed to chew scenery with no dramatic purpose, the performers who sometimes accidentally bring gravity to "Glee" will continue to be ignored.
