Emmy Nomination Preview 2012 - Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy

Two 'Modern Family' frontrunners return, but will older actresses crash the field?

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy

Last Year's Nominees:
Julie Bowen, "Modern Family"
Jane Krakowski, "30 Rock"
Jane Lynch, "Glee"
Sofia Vergara, "Modern Family"
Betty White, "Hot in Cleveland"
Kristen Wiig, "Saturday Night Live"

Attrition: None. All six nominees, including winner Julie Bowen, are eligible again this year and there's little reason to feel that any of them are particularly vulnerable, making this a very hard field to crack, which doesn't mean that the category isn't awash in potential break-in candidates, with at least three high-profile actresses shifting categories in hopes of bringing into the nomination field.

Click through for my unscientific predictions. The first six slides are my predicted nominees. From there, the slides are at least somewhat in order of likelihood to earn a nomination until the last handful, which are dark horses and personal preferences.

This was a hugely depressing gallery. Most of the best performers are in the "other" section.

That is such a bland potential six; so basically I have no doubt you're 100% correct.

(While I certainly don't enjoy Mee Maw, her bits of lucidity this season have made her slightly more tolerable than the train wreck that was that character last season)

Other notalbe..Dianan Agron...hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaha. Funniest thing I have heard in awhile. Especailly in comedy, she has no comedic timing AT ALL. Good one.

dan Kelly O - But she was PARALYZED! For three episodes! And she CHANGED AS A PERSON! Remember, only some of these are my own preferences. Some are the people Emmy voters are likely to embrace...

so So what she was paralazed and changed as a person. That doesn't mean she acted it well. She is very bland on screen.

dan So - So, Emmy voters respond to big emotional story arcs every bit as much as actual performances. Plus, she's not in my Top 20, so I'm not sure what we're debating her. She's one of a dozen names listed in a group of people who aren't gonna get Emmy nods.

Naya Rivera is so overrated by her fans... I've seen a bit of Glee this year and I don't get why she should be there. This girl has one intonation and one way of delivery. Not the makes of a good actress. but those awards shows are so average, who know she might get a nom.. which is unfair because I can think of at least 8 more deserving ppl.

sorrtitstrue She was not as funny this year and Naya does not do the drama as well as the comedy. She gets most of her attention because she is playing a teen lesbian. She is good but not nomination good.

Bruna @ sorrtitstrue: i've never seen her before, but from what I've seen in Glee, she wasn't funny nor good lol and you are right abt the attention coming from due to the fact that she plays a teen lesbian. It's a shame because fandom ruins real talent.

Dianne Ladd deserves to win this without a doubt. In a perfect world both Dern and Ladd would win for "Enlightened". "Consider Helen" was an absolutely astounding episode of television and a terrific showcase for the actress.

For Gillian Jacobs on slide 18, you mention Jacob's work on Season 4 of Community, when it should be Season 3.

To mention Heather Morris and an emmy nomination all in one sentence ,should be shot.Seriously. To mention Heather Morris (a really bad actress!) next to Naya Rivera's acting performances, should be shot.Seriously.

Was the pizza pizza bit hilarious? Maybe I can't see the character outside her early season one context but for me the only time Gillian Jacobs is funny is in scenes where other characters point out how unappealing she is. Maybe you would argue that it's the character who is unappealing and would continue to blame community's writers for her inability to connect with audiences? I still think the character wouldn't have required so much reverse-engineering if Jacobs had given a better performance. Annie started of as an off-putting character but Alison Brie managed to make her watchable without the writer's having the change much.

Tomincmh Thank you. I've never been as big a fan of Britta or Jacobs as a lot of other Community fans are. It always felt like Dan Harmon was bending over backwards to make us like her. It always bugged me cause it felt like all that focus was at the expense of pretty much any sort of character development for Shirley and especially Annie. Alison's done so much quality work with a character that, up until a handful of season 3 episodes, was very under-written.

This list makes me sad. Alison Brie in "others" category...sigh. I get that actors can be good even when their shows aren't (see Kristin Chenoweth), but it still pains me to see Kaley Cuoco and Naya Rivera on ANY acting list before ANYONE from Community. Oh well.

Nice piece on Betty White though - that made me laugh out loud.

Naya Rivera should have gotten nominated last year in all honesty. She had absolutely zero material to work with this season. Glee is an absolute joke at this point.

Personally, I don't think she's overrated by her fans. As someone who is somewhat of a casual viewer of Glee, and not a member of any particular fandom, I'd say she stands out quite a bit on the show acting-wise. Of course, that's not saying much because Glee does not possess many formidable actors but she definitely was a bright spot in season 3. Much more so in season 2. I don't see her getting a nomination though.

Hmm, I think my picks would be:
    Kaitlyn Olsen
    Jane Krakowski
    Anna Chlumsky
    Julie Bowen
    Busy Philips
I should note that Diane Ladd is excellent, but the performance is even less comedic than the show (not much comedy to begin with) and I like to nominate comedic performances in comedy categories.

Kristen Bell not only RUTSes the entire field, but is in the wrong category. She belongs in comedy LEAD actress for House of Lies. She's the lead actress in the show and should've been promoted as such. But Showtime needed to placate the egos of Edie Falco, Laura Linney and Mary Louise Parker by giving them first preference in lead actress. A disgrace. Shame on you, Showtime.

In my perfect world, "Jenna" would've won the Emmy once and will win again (one for 3rd season of 30 Rock, and one for this season)...
Also, Merritt Weaver will be nominated for Nurse Jackie for 1st and 4th season...this season does not have a single weak episode at all...
Also, I love Enlightened (I seem to be the only one), but I do agree it's more of a drama than comedy...
