Peter Dinklage tries to defend Emmy's toughest category
Brendan Coyle of 'Downton Abbey'
Brendan Coyle, "Downton Abbey"
Nomination Status: If "Downton Abbey" is a juggernaut in its first year in the Drama Series field, Coyle sounds like a plausible beneficiary.
In His Favor: Emmy voters loved "Downton Abbey" when it was treated as a miniseries last year and that was when the hype was still just a trickle, before it became a full-on deluge. Our perception may be that Season Two of "Downton Abbey" was weaker than the first, but Emmy voters may disagree and they may find themselves sympathizing with poor Mr. Bates and his constantly thwarted attempts to just be happy in love.
Working Against Him: I was already flipping a coin between Coyle and Jim Carter for the most likely recipient of a "Downton Abbey" nomination in this category and as much as I respect Coyle, I don't think he really has a merit-based claim for a nomination. It just happens to be easy to imagine circumstances that get him nominated, which you can't say for some of the people I've listed below him.
