Peter Dinklage tries to defend Emmy's toughest category
Mandy Patinkin of 'Homeland'
Mandy Patinkin, "Homeland"
Nomination Status: Support for "Homeland" is sure to be solid. If it's STRONG -- say, 10 or 12 nominations? -- Patinkin probably gets carried to a nomination and I end up looking like I really underestimated his chances. Since I like Mandy Patinkin, I can deal with that.
In His Favor: A three-time Emmy nominee and a winner for "Chicago Hope," Patinkin gave a sensitive, intelligent performance on one of the year's most admired new shows. A consummate supporting performance, Patinkin's presence boosted Claire Danes' sure-to-be-Emmy-winning work every time they shared the screen together. That's high and deserving praise.
Working Against Him: There's a strong sense that "Homeland," as great as it is, is practically a two-hander, built around the performances by Danes and Damian Lewis, with everybody else in the background. The leads are such dominant presences that it's hard for anybody else to get oxygen. Maybe "Homeland" producers will give Mandy the chance to sing next season. That would guarantee Patinkin a nomination.
